Humbled!

A middle eastern man reaches over and touches my arm in the elevator and says 'Good to see you, brother.' I turn to see the father of a girl who was a patient at that same hospital sixteen years ago while awaiting a heart transplant. I cannot begin to tell you of the joy and concern that I felt in that moment. Joy at seeing this special friend and concern of why he was back at the hospital. He told me that his daughter was doing well and was currently in the cath lab for a follow up. A few hours later we all got to visit and it was so good to see his daughter's smile and his smile, side by side. In the midst of my day to day visits I struggle to understand the hatred that I see in the world around me. In that room, as in so many others, I was experiencing life in the way that I believe God desires it to be lived. It is a place where the gift of life and the preciousness of life is understood and never taken for granted. When I turned to leave, this friend walked me to the door and said, 'I am glad to see that you are still doing this because the children in this world need more music. I know in my heart we will meet again.' I will be forever humbled by this journey that I have been entrusted with.
